Gold Exchange & Technology Park advocated

The Chief Executive of South African Diamond Corporation Botswana (SAFDICO), Rutang Moses, has proposed the establishment of a Gold Technology Park and Gold-Exchange for the country; to help create jobs and maximise the benefits of the gold resource to the economy.

“Government must partner with private sector investors to help establish a model that will create opportunities for small, medium and micro enterprises and generate greater efficiencies for all.

“Ghana needs to take a cue from the Botswana diamond technology park and diamond exchange to maximise the benefits of the gold resource to the economy,” said Ruteng at a meeting in Accra.

“Gold is a main contributor to Ghana’s economy; there should be a focus around what else the gold provides for people to have more jobs, and therefore the gold park should be the support service around the mining of gold,” she stated.

She explained that the Diamond Exchange activities will bring together other ancillary businesses; not just the mining, not just the cutting and polishing.

“The support service companies to transport these diamonds from the outside city mines to the centre, it needs a specialized service: security companies, you will need gold brokers, you will need gold banks to support those who are buying.  Those alone give opportunities to entrepreneurs locally,” she added.

The concept of a Technology Park is that of a supply chain cluster, housing the entire industry in a centralised, secure manner. It is modelled on similar successful international developments.

The Technology Park tenants enjoy superior levels of expertise and solid experience. Other tenants include companies that service the manufacturing industry such as local and international banks, courier companies, machinery suppliers, security, the Police, a world renowned laboratory, mining houses, brokers, consultants, and office of the sector Ministry.
