Kwesi Enyan,
Director General of Operations, Rocksure International -- an indigenous
Ghanaian mining company, has called for a complete revolution in the country’s
mining sector to help promote needed development in the country.
He said the
country is endowed with abundant minerals, but there must be appropriate
policies to properly redefine the country’s minerals sector as a catalyst for
development.
Mr. Enyan, who
was speaking in an interview with the B&FT, explained that the
public perception about mining companies has been negative, with the mind-set
that miningcompanies just take minerals out of the country; but when you look
at it, mining companies bring great benefits to the country they operate in.
“We look at the direct money government gets such as
royalties, corporate tax; they also do not look at the employment benefit as in
what goes in, what comes out; even the fact that we have multi-nationals who
come into the country and bring money,” he said.
Commenting
on the new contract agreement, he explained that Rocksure has secured a US$20million
contract with Perseus Mining (Ghana) company at Ayanfuri in the Upper Denkyira
West District of the Western Region, to execute ‘a complete mining project for
the company’.
Rocksure’s five-years
of experience in drilling, blast and haulage among other expertise with giant
Anglogold Ashanti in Bogoso and Daman, as well as foreign projects scattered
across the continent, including Mali, easily won it the job.
The Perseus
contract takes Rocksure’s business units to four after similar ones in Bogoso,
Daman and Takoradi which are all running concurrently.
The Chief
Executive Officer of Rocksure Mr. Kwasi Osei Ofori, and the Board Chairman of
Perseus, Nana Prah Agyeinsem VI, signed for their respective companies to
officially signal the project’s commencement.
As per the
agreement, at least 40 percent of the workforce would be locals within the
Ayanfuri community and its environs in the spirit of promoting indigenisation.
Perseus
Mining will manage the final leg of the production process and the marketing
aspect.
Nana
Agyeinsem VI, who is also the Paramount Chief of Assin Kushia in the Central
Region, said the victory by Rocksure in a stiff competition was an indication
that Ghanaian local mining companies have come of age and are ready to take the
world by storm.
Mr. Ofori
promised to build on the experiences of the last five years to add value for
Perseus and to enhance its own image.
