Total Petroleum Ghana Limited in collaboration with
security agencies has embarked on a road safety education campaign in
the Central Region, targetting drivers, pedestrians and residents to adopt a
holistic safety culture to help save and protect lives on the road.
The campaign, dubbed ‘Total Caravan for Safety’ under the theme ‘My Life on the Road -- Dↄ Wonkwa”, was represented by
the Ghana Police Service, Fire and Ambulance Services, National Road Safety
Commission (NRSC), Ghana Red Cross Society and other media partners.
The campaign, which travelled through several towns
and villages located on the Yamoransa-Komenda Highway in the Central Region stopped
at specific communities where motor accident risks are high: such locations
include Asaman, Broyibima and Atabadze, all in the Central Region.
Stephen Anokye of the NRSC said that road traffic
crashes are responsible for at least six deaths a day and approximately 1,800 a
year, resulting in many people being injured and incapacitated.
He stated that most of these crashes were as a result
of over-speeding, reckless and drunk driving, fatigue and poor vehicle
maintenance amongst others.
At a durbar in Komenda, the Regional
MTTU Commander Chief Superintendent Felix Cosmos indicated there is need
for all to work tirelessly toward reducing road traffic crashes and casualties
and ensure that Ghana attains the safest road transportation system in Africa.
So far, hotspots along various routes including Accra
- Suhum, Suhum - Nkawkaw, Accra - Cape-Coast, Tema - Aflao, Techiman -
Kintampo, Kumasi - Techiman, and Takoradi - Tarkwa have experienced the caravan.
According to Total Petroleum’s External Affairs
Manager, Emmanuel Menyah Hughes, the campaign is expected to continue to other
regions of the country to provide effective education and awareness for
communities located mainly along the highways identified as accident-prone
locations.
