The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Mr. Nii Osah Mills has
pledged government’s readiness to engage with mining companies to provide a
comprehensive platform for discussions to enhance sustainability and protection
of investments.
“Government will continue to engage with mining companies and
provide them with a platform for timely discussions to enhance sustainability
and protection of investments.”
Minister Mills said this when he paid a maiden working visit to AngloGold
Ashanti Iduapriem Mine in Tarkwa to afford him an opportunity to familiarise
himself with operational activities of the mine.
Among the team in the company of the minister were the Chief
Inspector of Mines at the Minerals Commission and the Acting CEO of the Chamber
of Mines, Sulemanu Koney.
He commended the mine’s management for the feat achieved in its
operations despite the challenges confronting the industry.
He stated that the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission
will be strengthened to proactively inspect all operating mines to ensure
compliance with national best practices programmes of mining operations.
Mr. Mills indicated that government places premium on the mining
sector, and called for more engagement between the industry and stakeholders.
Managing Director of Iduapriem Mine Sicelo Ntuli explained that
AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem Mine will continue to demonstrate its commitment
to leaving communities with a sustainable future as a responsible mining
company.
AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem Mine has a clear social investment
strategy that focuses on education and youth development, health, water and
sanitation and local economic development.
The strategy, he said, is implemented in partnership with the
Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly and host communities.
