Over 2,500 residents of Dumasi in the Prestea-Huni Valley District of the Western Region affected by the operations of the Golden Star Resource Limited (GSRL) Prestea/Bogoso mine will be compensated and resettled.
The
legal representative of the community, Akwasi Gyimah-Bota, told journalists at
a press conference held at Dumasi that the resettlement package agreement was
signed on February 21, 2013, between the Dumasi Resettlement Negotiation Team
(DRNT) and the mining firm after series of meetings and negotiations.
Some
facilities in the resettlement package included over 800 housing units with
toilets, bathrooms and kitchen facilities.
The
rest are a community centre, health-centre, police station, classroom blocks,
churches and mosques and water reticulation system to provide potable water for
the residents.
Lawyer
Gyimah-Bota said socio-economic and assets surveys were conducted by the
Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency and all the necessary
state agencies before finalising the Resettlement Agreement Package.
He
said an Implementation and Monitoring Committee (IMC) has been constituted to
ensure that the resettlement package iss implemented to the letter.
Nana
Kwabena Oppong I, Chief of Dumasi, appealed to the mining firm to employ the
youth in the area, since their farms and other sources of livelihood had been
captured by the company's concession.
Mr
Atta Sarpong Kumankomah, Construction Site Manager for the Dumasi Resettlement
Plan, said the mining company has cleared the site for the project while
engineering works are underway.
He
said the project will be completed in 18 months and urged the residents to
exercise restraint.
